Our Environmental Law Experience

Building on over two decades of legal experience, we have been at the forefront of assisting our clients in addressing the legal issues arising in the broadly-defined, dynamic, and evolving field of environmental law. Throughout this time, we have worked with many of our clients, on an on-going basis, to provide strategic environmental risk-management advice. We operate throughout all stages of the project lifecycle - from project inception, through to licensing, operations and into decommissioning and reclamation.

We currently act as advisors and advocates for a variety of public and private sector clients. In doing so, we have appeared before all levels of provincial and federal courts in Alberta and Canada. Acting as solicitors and regulatory advisors, we have the goal of maximizing opportunities - as well as minimizing risks and adverse consequences - of environmental impacts and ever-changing federal, territorial and provincial environmental regulatory regimes. Our approach to environmental practice is also supplemented by our practical and applied knowledge of the important area of Aboriginal consultation in environmental and regulatory processes.

Environmental Regulation and Environmental Risk Management for Corporations

Without an environmental lawyer, it can be difficult to navigate your way forward if you are not aware of associated risks, opportunities, and corporate responsibilities. We can provide assessments to prevent damage, develop risk matrices, develop due diligence programs, as well as consult on risk mitigation and minimization.

Communications and Public Relations Surrounding Environmental Issues

Meadows Law can bring its expertise to assist your communication, marketing and consultation advisors in their communications about environmental issues. In addition to our own expertise, we have established relationships with a wide-range of advisors and consultants who can support this work.

Landowner Rights

When presented with environmental challenges, Meadows Law can help you understand your rights. For environmental contamination, we aid parties to obtain a reasonable solution. We will represent your interests as well as engage with regulators and adverse parties.

Environmental Issues for Builders, Construction Contractors and Property Owners

We have extensive experience with respect to identifying significant advantages and pitfalls when building sustainability into the procurement, construction, operations and maintenance cycles now commonly associated with ‘green’ building.

With respect to cleanup of contaminated lands for purchasers or developers, the costs involved in environmental litigation and remediation can be considerable. Therefore, it is important that property buyers understand provincial and federal laws that govern this area. In some cases, there are overt physical signs or history-of-use that should be analyzed, and we can address potential liability and risks that could significantly impact decisions and negotiations.
